Learning to write the Gurmukhi alphabet
Gurmukhi is the script Punjabi is written in. Its alphabet is called the Painti Akhari — ਪੈਂਤੀ ਅੱਖਰੀ, literally "thirty-five letters" — and it runs from ੳ (ūṛā) through to ੜ (ṛāṛā).
This page teaches the letters the way they are taught on a ਤਖ਼ਤੀ (takhti), the wooden board Punjabi children have always practised on: one stroke at a time, in the right order and direction. Trace each stroke with a finger, a stylus or a mouse. Every letter is spoken aloud, and thirty-one of them come with a word to say out loud together — ਊਠ (ūṭh, camel) for ੳ, ਮੋਰ (mor, peacock) for ਮ.
Four letters — ਙ, ਞ, ਣ and ੜ — never begin a word, so they are taught as sounds you hear inside words like ਪਾਣੀ (pāṇī, water) and ਘੜੀ (ghaṛī, clock).
